Lifelines Documentary Series – Substance Use Disorder
From 2004 to 2017 there were 242 suicide deaths among Colorado’s First Responders. Of those reported deaths, 35% experienced substance use issues. If our community wants to seriously do something to address suicidal ideation within our First Responder community, we have got to tackle the challenge and stigma associated with Substance Use Disorder.
The news channels, commercials, and social media often emphasize the crisis that is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that plagues our veterans of the past and warfighters of the present, but how often does the PTSD among firefighters publicize?

First Responders are routinely exposed to traumatic events in the course of their duties. In fact, at any given time, one in four First Responders is experiencing Posttraumatic Stress and if left untreated, they are at increased risk for long-term mental and physical health problems. However, with the support and care of family, friends and peers, many people are able to recover from the effects of a traumatic stress. That is why it is so very important for First Responders to know that seeking and accepting support and help is essential to healing.
